A gutter system without a regular maintenance plan could end up costing you tens of thousands of dollars repairing the damages.

If you do not have a gutter system, check out our article on the importance of a properly installed gutter system.

Problems without Gutter Maintenance

Gutter systems that are not properly installed and maintained can wreak havoc on your home. The #1 cause of basement water problems is improperly installed and/or maintained gutter systems. Many others problems can also occur such as;

  1. Fire Hazard – Leaves and debris in gutters can be a fire hazard.
  2. Deterioration – Leaves and shingle granules, as well as other organic matter, when sitting in your gutters can deteriorate them and eventually lead to system failure.
  3. Rotten fascia, decking and eaves – If your gutter system is not properly flowing then water will pond or overflow and that can rot the fascia, roof decking and eaves. Leaks of this nature could appear to be a roof leak.
  4. Flooding – Without proper water control and flow your basement could flood. This sometimes happens with water overflow or a downspout not having adequate extension or placement to direct the water. A clogged downspout could also result in flooding.
  5. Mold and Interior Damage – Gutter system failure could result in damage to your homes interior walls, paint and flooring not to mention the possibilities of mold in the interior wall systems from undetected leaks.
  6. Landscape Damage – Landscaping can be costly and water can damage the surrounding landscape to your home.
  7. Wildlife – Debris and ponding water in gutters are the perfect homes for rodents, pest, mold and honeycombs from bee infestations.
  8. Staining of your home exterior – Running water can stain your siding, fascia, patios, decks, driveways and more.

As you can see, without a gutter maintenance plan you could end up spending tens of thousands of dollars in repairs! Most homes need to be maintained twice a year but some homes will require more frequent cleanings.

Homes with lower sloped roofs generally will require more frequent cleanings, as well as, homes with trees closer to the home. As your roof ages, it will also lose shingle granules. When this happens you may need to clean more frequently.

Some signs, but not limited to, that your gutter system needs to be maintained are leaves, leaky gutters, ponding water, stains on siding and more. Once you see rust spots, dents, holes, wood rot, fallen gutters and broken seams you will most likely need to replace your gutter system.
