Roofing Coatings

Roofing coatings seal the roof surface, protecting it from rain and wind damage.

There are many different types of commercial roof coatings that are used by roofing contractors, the most commonly used commercial roof coatings fall into three basic categories. Acrylic, Polyurethane (or Urethane) and Silicones. It is important that you understand the acceptable uses for all of these commercial roof coatings. Since the annual growth rate of commercial roof coatings is approximately 5%, they are widely used by commercial roofing contractors to coat commercial metal roofs, commercial single ply roofs and smooth surface and granular surfaced modified bitumen commercial roofing systems.

Hicks Roofing installs all major types of commercial roof coatings. We must conduct a full roof inspection and analysis in order to determine if a roof coating is a suitable option, and if so, which of these systems are the best choice. More often than not we find that urethane commercial roof coatings are the best option. These commercial roof coatings provide high tensile strength along with a durable surface. Although positive drainage is recommended Hicks Roofing has installed thousands of square feet of urethane roof coatings and these coatings stand up well to ponding water situations.

Acrylic Coatings
Acrylic roof coatings are used more than any other commercial roof coatings in Atlanta and throughout the Country because of their competitive price and ease of application. Acrylic coatings are water based coatings and the solids contents vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. It is important to note that the higher the solids content, the higher quality the coating. The weakness of acrylic coatings at are the low tensile strength which causes these coatings to resist wear and tear. In addition acrylic roof coatings should not be used in areas where ponding water are found in commercial roof applications.

Silicone Coatings
Silicone roof coatings are commonly used to coat SPF commercial roof systems. They are also used to coat other commercial roof applications. Given their high price their market share of the commercial roofing market is limited. Benefits of silicone commercial roof coatings include; their ability to stand up to extreme temperatures and their ability to stand up to ponding water issues on commercial roofs, especially here in the Atlanta area given the amount of rain we experienced annually. One of the main drawbacks of silicone roof coatings is the fact that the only coatings that stick to silicone, is silicone. They also have a very slick surface.
