Acrylic roof coating comprises of water-based ingredients made of a single element to create a coating by using acrylic polymers formulated to be very flexible, impermeable, and tolerant to movement at low temperatures. In addition, they are elastic. Acrylic coatings are sprayed to form a solid crust without seams. The coating can expand and contract with building movements to avoid rips and tears. Furthermore, acrylic coatings do not have any solvents resulting in low odor. They also contain low volatile organic content in their components, which makes the installation process to be less disruptive. Usually, acrylic roof coatings are colored white to achieve maximum sunlight reflection which causes a cooling effect inside buildings for long hours although they can be tinted to meet the customer’s specifications and the aesthetic requirements of a building.

Silicone Roof Coating
Silicone roof coatings majorly comprise of silicone resin and some other chemicals mixed to form a roof coating containing a considerable amount of solid content that is waterproof, can be applied quickly, and is very reflective. The significant component of a solid material in silicon roof coatings enables the coating to be implemented in a thicker pass allowing quicker installation and fewer coats to achieve similar thickness or more than other coatings could offer. In addition, silicone membranes are waterproof throughout the roof field with no leaks or patches around equipment. Silicone coatings are best for areas with extreme temperature changes considering they have an excellent ultraviolet resistance, which makes them extremely reflective creating a cooling effect and increasing the durability of the rooftop.

At any particular time when an owner of a building decides to acquire a roof coating for their property, they face a difficult choice between acrylic and silicone roof coatings. Both coatings have their pros and cons depending on the specified customized needs. Sometimes, building owners choose acrylic coating considering that the material is less expensive. However, the entire project tends to be costly since one would need to prime the roof before applying the coating material leading to an increment of material and labor costs. Furthermore, it will require more material to achieve a thicker coating as compared to when using a silicone roof coating, which also means that one will have to spend more on acquiring the material to complete the job. A silicone coating, on the other hand, does not require a prime to the roof and does not require as much material. Also considering overall performance, a silicone coating outperforms an acrylic coating once installed.

Compared to an acrylic coating, a silicone coating is much more reflective, can resist throbbing water, does not leak, and has a longer lifespan. It is best to choose a silicone coating when the roof is leaking or sagging but is in good condition structurally and does not threaten the safety of building occupants. The acrylic coating is best applicable in areas that experience dry climate whereas, for a humid climate, a silicone coating would be the best choice.

Before installing a roof coating, the owner may be required to research several factors about the roof. The factors include the roof condition, the presence of throbbing water, the location of the building, roof slope, exposure to chemicals, temperature levels, and ultraviolet exposure. Without checking on the highlighted factors, the owner may be forced to conduct a roof coating twice leading to extra costs.
